[Also in Group XXIX] An hydraulic copying-device, e.g. for a milling-machine comprising a table 4, Fig. 1, movable in two directions at right-angles relatively to a tool 2 by the pistons 7a, 8a of motors 7, 8, comprises a feeler 11, Fig. 2, suspended from a casing 10 by a spherical joint 11a and passing through a tube 12, itself suspended from the casing by a spherical joint 12a. The casing 10 is fixed to an arm 9 of the machine-frame 1 and contains flanges 13, 21, 25 and a space 19. Within flange 13 are a number of piston-valves 14, e.g. six, equally spaced around and held in contact with feeler 11 by springs 15, and having connections 16 with a source of low-pressure hydraulic-fluid via conduit 17; via 23 to the cylinders of pistons 22 contained in flange 21, and via 18 to space 19 which communicates via conduit 20 with the sump 33. The pistons 22, of which there is one for each valve 14, are urged against the tube 12 by the pressure in the cylinders and, if desired, by springs 22b, Fig. 4. Within flange 25 are four piston-valves 26, equally-spaced around tube 12 and held in contact therewith by springs 27. The valves 26 have connections 28 with a source of highpressure hydraulic-fluid via conduit 30; the sump 33 via annular chamber 29 and conduit 31; and the appropriate ends of the motorcylinders 7, 8 via conduits 32. The work 5 and pattern. 6 are mounted on the table 4 and, to move the feeler into contact with the pattern, the feeler is moved towards the pattern so that some of the valves 14 are actuated to cause movement of the sleeve 12 in the opposite direction, such movement actuating one or more of valves 26 to move the table and pattern, which subsequently centralizes the feeler. To commence copying, the flange 21 is now turned relatively to casing 10 by handle 38, thus changing the position of the pistons 22 relatively to their associated valves 14 and hence causing those pistons, which were under pressure to centralise the feeler, to move the tube 12 and hence one or more of the valves 26. In a modification the valves 14 control the supply of compressed air to the pistons 22, in which case the exhaust connections 18 are connected through the wall of the flange to the exterior of the casing 10 and conduit 20 is emitted. For copying in the vertical dimension, feeler 11 is made hollow to contain a rod movable axially by a tip contacting a pattern to actuate a valve controlling a piston for moving the table vertically. When it is desired to copy areas where the feeler 11 cannot contact its pattern 6, the fluid supply to valves 14 is cut off and the feeler is moved over the area by hand.
