A primary cell has a cup-shaped zinc electrode Z surrounded by a cylindrical insulating sleeve I enclosed by a metallic sheath S, the ends of the cell being provided with closure terminal members T, B so shaped as to provide a peripheral edge which can be embedded in and buttressed against the inwardly turned ends of the sleeve I. The bottom terminal member B has annular stiffening ribs arranged to contact the overlying portion of. the bottom 5 of the electrode Z and the peripheral edge 15 of the member B may be downwardly inclined as in Figs. 1, 4 or horizontal as in Fig. 10. Other shapes of the ribs and their relative position are described. The bottom and top ends of the sleeve I and of the sheath S are inwardly turned at their edges so as to provide a liquid joint against the respective edges of the members B, T penetrating into the inner surface of the sleeve I. The member B or T may be at either the bottom or the top end of the cell, or at both ends. The sleeve I is made of substantially electrolyte-impervious material, e.g. polythylene lined on each side with Kraft paper or it may be formed of impregnated paper. |
