There is provided a method of operating an electronic shelf label system performed by a gateway providing update data provided from an electronic shelf label server to a plurality of electronic shelf label tags through wireless communications, the method including, determining a tag group to which the update data is to be transmitted, transmitting a price update multi-poll (PUMP) frame including link schedule information and tag identification information regarding the tag group, and transmitting a block data frame including the update data on the tag group when a response message is received from at least one electronic shelf label tag belonging to the tag group, wherein the tag group includes the at least one electronic shelf label tag among the plurality of electronic shelf label tags.
