<p>A two stroke internal combustion engine comprising a cylinder in which a piston (1.10, fig.1) and piston rod 4.13 reciprocate, the cylinder above the piston forming a combustion chamber and comprising an exhaust valve (1.5, fig.1) actuated by a cam and an intake valve 4.9. The cylinder below the piston is separate to the crank-case and forms a pumping chamber comprising a spring damped intake valve (1.12, fig.1) and a spring damped transfer valve (1.20, fig.1) which connects to the combustion chamber intake via a variable volume intake chamber (1.22, fig.1). The change in volume within the additional chamber 1.22 is hydraulically actuated by movement of the piston rod 4.13 within a hollow member (1.15, fig.1). The piston rod 4.13 also contains channels 4.5 and 4.8 for the delivery and return of an air/oil mix to cool the springs 4.19 within the piston head 4.11 and 4.12 and lubricate the piston ring seals 4.2 and 4.4. A system is also disclosed to vary the compression ratio of the engine.</p> |
