[Also in Group XXIX] A safety device for hydraulic pressure installations, e.g. hydraulic brakes, comprises a casing 10 provided with several cylinders 11 having outlet pipes 30 at their lower ends and a top casing cap 12 with an inlet pipe 16 from a main cylinder communicating with the upper ends of the cylinders 11 and with an inner chamber 201 having passages 23 leading to the upper part of each cylinder and a central duct 25 joining lateral ducts 26 leading to the lower part of each cylinder, and with a valve 38 at the join, the pistons moving against springs 43 to cut off the passages 23 from the outlets and operate an electrical optical or acoustic indicating device 34 when they move to the bottom of their cylinders on an outlet pipe being fractured. Normally pressure at 16 is communicated to the brakes connected at 28 by the pistons being forced down in their cylinders, the pistons returning against cap stops 21 when the pressure is released at 16. Should a brake pipe 29 burst the piston makes an electrical contact at 32 when pressure is applied at 16 and this operates an alarm 34. The passages 23 enter the cylinders below the pistons in their raised position and allow expansion of the hydraulic fluid on temperature rise. Leakage of fluid along these passages on breakage of the brake pipe is prevented by the seal 42 on the pistons moving below the passages 23. Air in the hydraulic system may be removed through a valve 38 by means of a screw 36.</p> |
