A pneumatic tyre cover in which the side walls 11, 12 are reinforced by at least one ply of cones 15, 16 lying side by side in the radial planes of the tyre has the cones of at least one of the plies in each of the side walls 11, 12 extended from the bead 17 or 18 of the cover to a point beyond the near edge but not beyond the far edge of the tread 14 so that the cords 15, 16 of the two plies overlap each other beneath the treads 14 and the two plies of the cords 15, 16 are bonded together by being separately embedded in the rubber of the cover where they overlap. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 the cords 15, 16 overlap at the centre of the tread 14 and in Fig. 3 the cords 31, 32 extend to the edges of the tread. In the crown 13, Fig. 1, three plies of cords 19, 20, 21 are provided and are arranged to run in three different directions so that the three sets of cords are " triangulated ". The crown 33, Fig. 3, has two plies 27, 28 arranged to run in different directions in non-radial planes so as to achieve the desired " triangulation ". The plies 27, 28 are embedded in a harder rubber than used in the side walls. The side walls can be provided with more than one ply of cards and where extra plies are provided they can be continuous so as to extend from bead to bead or one of them can be discontinuous and overlap beneath the tread. Between the crown plies and the tread there can be provided a " breaker " ply embedded in rubber softer than the tread. Specifications 628,060, 677,166 and 698,915 are referred to. |
