A metal article has a double-structured corrosion preventing coating having a homogenous base part including and mixture of oxide or oxides and hydroxide or hydroxides of the metal and a top part of at least one nanolayer of a chemically resistive material. The coating thickness is preferably less than 1 micron. The base part of the coating may have pores that are substantially filled by the top part. The top part may comprise an oxide, nitride, carbonate, carbide or their mixes or laminates, laminates with ceramic and metallic layers or laminates with inorganic or organic polymers or both and ceramic layers. Also disclosed is a method of preparing a corrosion resistant coating on a metallic substrate comprising the steps of anodising the surface of the substrate to produce a subcoating and adding a top layer by atomic layer deposition. Anodising may be performed in a three electrode electrochemical bath. |
