A method for treating cartilage damage caused by degenerative osteoarthritis presenting without plasma infiltrates of cartilage comprising orally administering to a patient in need thereof an effective degenerative osteoarthritis treatment amount of a sulphated hyaluronic acid (HAS), wherein the hyaluronic acid used to prepare said HAS has a molecular weight between 100,000 and 230,000 D, and wherein said HAS has a degree of sulphation between 0.5 and 3.5, and where said administration is effective to increase within a joint exhibiting said cartilage damage the amount of the material that constitutes the scaffolding of the cartilage matrix.
