An apparatus for measuring characteristics of a specimen. The apparatus can accurately measure, for example, but not limited to, peak, evolution, and residual values of the undrained shear strength, yield, and viscous and plastic flow (including hardening and softening) characteristics of cohesive sediments at various pre-set and variable values of the rotational velocity of the vane sensor.

1. An apparatus for measuring characteristics of a specimen comprising:
a sensor drive shaft coupled to a one of a variety of sensors, the sensors measuring the characteristics of the specimen; a main measurement head applying a rotation rate to the sensor drive shaft, said main measurement head determining an undrained shear strength of the specimen; and a computer coupled to the main measurement head, the computer collecting the measured characteristics while the rotation rate is greater than a pre-selected rate threshold and while the undrained shear strength is greater than a pre-selected strength threshold.
