Novel acoustically sensitive drug carrying particles comprising non-lamellar forming lipids are disclosed, as well as uses and methods thereof. The drug carrying particles accumulate in the diseased target tissue and efficiently release their payload upon exposure to acoustic energy.

1. A sonosensitive particulate material, comprising:
more than 10 mol % phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) with an acyl chain of 18 carbon atoms or longer and/or more than 10 mol % phosphatidylcholine (PC) with an acyl chain of 20 carbon atoms or longer; polyethylene glycol (PEG) or a derivative thereof; and a drug, said material comprising no undissolved gases, wherein the head group of said PE is not conjugated to PEG or a derivative thereof.
