Systems and methods related to handling solids in microfluidic systems are generally described. Many of the systems and methods described herein address the need to inhibit the formation of blockages in microfluidic channels.

1. A method, comprising:
establishing a flow of a first fluid containing a solid in a first microfluidic channel such that the first fluid is flowing in a first direction; establishing a flow of a second fluid containing a solvent in a second microfluidic channel wherein:
the second fluid is flowing in a second direction substantially parallel to the first direction, andthe first and second microfluidic channels are in fluid communication via a porous structure; and contacting the first and second fluids such that the solvent dissolves at least a portion of the solid.
