Disclosed are a display apparatus capable of checking protocol information of set-top boxes (STBs) connected thereto and automatically selecting protocol information corresponding to an STB to perform communication, and a control method thereof. The display apparatus according to the present invention comprises a display unit; an image processing unit processing an image signal to display an image on the display unit; a communications unit connected to an STB to transmit and receive data; a storage unit, configured for communications with the STB and storing a plurality of protocol information corresponding to types of the STBs; and a controller, selecting any one protocol information corresponding to a connected STB among the plurality of protocol information, when the communications unit and the STB are connected, and controlling the communications unit to communicate with the connected STB according to the selected protocol information.
