The present invention relates to a method and a device for controlling the engine of an industrial vehicle, which includes a sensor unit for sensing multiple pieces of sensing information required for selecting the working conditions of a vehicle; a tool controlling unit for selecting the working conditions based on the multiple pieces of information sensed by the sensor unit, selecting an engine mode corresponding to the selected working mode, and outputting the engine mode signal indicating the selected engine mode; and an engine controlling unit for controlling the engine output based on the engine mode signal outputted by the tool controlling unit. Therefore, according to the present invention, it is able to maintain tool performance without an additional operation by a worker at a decent level by providing an engine controlling method and a device for controlling the engine to improve the mileage of the tool.
