PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform image reading processing using a right/left division reading system at faster speed and with high quality.SOLUTION: An image sensor includes a plurality of photoelectric conversion elements which are continuously arranged and output received light as a pixel signal. A first region from one end of arrangement to a prescribed position in the arrangement and a second region from the prescribed position to the other end of the arrangement are divided and the pixel signals are outputted from the plurality of photoelectric conversion elements. When the image sensor receives reflected light from a background plate, an average value of pixel values is calculated from the plurality of pixel signals outputted from at least one of the first region and the second region. Correction is performed on shading correction in accordance with a comparison result obtained by comparing the average value with a reference value. The correction for one shading correction is performed for every one or more document images when the document images are continuously read.
