PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector capable of improving degradation in durability of a discharge lamp due to the projection of electrodes while achieving the maximum efficiency given to an image.SOLUTION: The projector includes: a discharge lamp; a discharge lamp drive part; a control part; a light modulation element; and a projection optical system. The control part alternatively repeats a high luminance period in which a drive current relatively large in absolute value is supplied to the discharge lamp and a low luminance period in which the drive current relatively low in absolute value is supplied to the discharge lamp, and controls the discharge lamp drive unit according to a drive current waveform constituted by the control waveform unit including the drive current of the first high luminance period, the drive current of the first low luminance period immediately after the first high luminance period, and the direct waveform pattern in which the drive current of the second high luminance period immediately after the first low luminance period becomes the same first polarity. |
