PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of accurately performing color shift correction control or density correction control without providing a diaphragm mechanism to an optical sensor.SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus includes: forming means for forming, on an image carrier, detection images including one or more lines formed with developer extending in a direction different from a direction of movement of the image carrier; and detection means for detecting position information or density information on the detection images on the basis of detection signals output from light receiving means in a period during which the detection images formed on the image carrier pass through an area irradiated with light by irradiation means. The detection means detects the position information or the density information on the detection images on the basis of signals according to a difference between the values of detection signals corresponding to the amount of received light including regular reflection light components from a first area of the detection images and on the surface of the image carrier, and values of the detection signals corresponding to the amount of received light including regular reflection light components from a second area of the detection images and on the surface of the image carrier, in which the respective lengths in the direction of movement of the first area and the second area are shorter than the length in the direction of movement of the lines. |
