Marine seismic data is acquired with a system (34) of steerable seismic streamers each having a number of seismic receivers (40). The streamers are intentionally maintained in a flared configuration while they are towed through a body of water. The lateral distance (d r ) between the outer-most, rearward-most receivers is at least 2% greater than the lateral distance (d f ) between the outer-most, forward-most receivers.
