Recovery mass comprises a porous solid support, copper sulfide and a metal sulfide whose metal is chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt or nickel, where the ratio of weight percentage of metals other than copper with the percentage by weight of copper is 0.01-2. Independent claims are included for: (1) preparing the recovery mass including preparing a material including a porous solid support, a copper compound and a metal compound whose metal is chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt or nickel, preparing an aqueous solution containing a copper precursor and a precursor of a metal including chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt and nickel, impregnating the porous solid support in the aqueous solution, maturing the impregnated support in a closed enclosure saturated with water, drying the matured material, and sulfurization of the dried material to transform metal compounds into metal sulfides; and (2) collecting heavy metals from gas or liquid effluent.
