A method for generating endogenous erythropoietin in a subject in need of increasing the levels of erythropoietin in the blood comprising administering a therapeutically effective dose of recombinant IL-12 to the subject, wherein the therapeutically effective dose of IL-12 elevates the endogenous erythropoietin blood concentration.
