Class 39(3) [Also in Group XXII] A consumable electrode for use in arc-melting highly reactive metals such as titanium, zirconium and their alloys in an inert atmosphere in a water-cooled copper crucible comprises a central core of solid metal, e.g. consisting of a forged or rolled bar of melt-cast titanium or of an alloying metal such as molybdenum, chromium, tungsten, manganese or aluminium, on or about which are assembled one or more metallic subelements made separately from the core and comprising discrete metallic particles bonded together. The sub-elements comprise pressed briquets of comminuted metals such as titanium or zirconium sponge or mixtures thereof with alloying metal chips. The core may be wrought or cast or formed by powder metallurgy and projects at both ends beyond the briquets, at one end for suspension and at the other end for striking the arc. The briquets may be pressed into cylindrical, cubical or other polygonal shape, centrally drilled and assembled in stacked relation on the core, to which they are tack welded especially at top and bottom of the assembly. The briquets may be pressed at 20-100 tons per square inch into elongated slabs of rectangular, semi-cylindrical or other contour and assembled lengthwise about a core of rectangular section, or grooved lengthwise for assembly about a core of circular section, and the assembly is integrated by riveting, welding or wiring. The briquets may be pressed into short cylinders 30 clustered in tiers about the core 29 and secured to one another and to the core by tack welding, strapping or wiring. The briquets may be pressed from titanium or zirconium sponge, flakes, powder or chips with chips of alloying metal. The core may be a rolled or forged agglomerate of coarse scrap or a continuous aluminium pipe.</p> |
