Modified polyamides are derived from formaldehyde, a dimeric fatty acid containing two carboxyl groups in the molecule and an aliphatic triamine. Specified dimeric fatty acids, which may contain up to 20 per cent by weight of dicarboxylic acids, e.g. adipic acid, sebacic acid, iso- and tere-phthalic acids or rosin dimer are polymerized fatty acids such as polymerized linoleic acid. Specified aliphatic triamines, which may contain up to 20 per cent by weight of other organic polyamines, e.g. ethylene diamine, propylene diamine, hexamethylene diamine, p-phenylene diamine, p,p1-diamino diphenyl methane or triethylene tetramine, are diethylene triamine or 3,31-diamino-di-propyl amine. The preformed polyamides may be modified by reaction with formaldehyde or the product of the reaction between the triamine and formaldehyde may be reacted with the dimeric fatty acid. The modified polyamides may be blended with incompletely condensed phenol-formaldehyde resins, specified phenols being phenol, cresol, xylenol, p-tertiary butyl phenol or diphenylol propane, in solution in butanol, isobutanol, secondary butanol, tertiary butanol, propanol, isomeric amyl alcohols, aromatic solvents, water or ethanol and with epoxy resins containing terminal epoxy groups, e.g. the reaction products of polyhydric phenols with epichlorhydrin or glycol chlorhydrin. In the Examples, (1), (2), (5), (6) and (12), polyamides made from dimer fatty acids and diethylene triamine are reacted with formaldehyde, a phenol-formaldehyde resin being blended with a solution of the product of Example (1) in butanol; (3) and (4), formaldehyde is reacted with diethylene triamine, the product being reacted with dimer fatty acid and blended with an epoxy resin; (7) a solution in butanol of a polyamide derived from dimer fatty acid and 3,31-diamino-di-propyl amine is reacted with paraformaldehyde and in Example (9) is blended with epoxy resins; (8) formaldehyde is reacted with 3,31-diamino-di-propyl amine and the product reacted with dimer fatty acid; (10) formaldehyde is reacted with a mixture of diethylene triamine and ethylene diamine, the product being reacted with dimer fatty acid; (11) a mixture of dimer fatty acid and adipic acid is condensed with diethylene triamine and modified by reaction with formaldehyde in the presence of N-butanol. The products may be used in forming films and for coating, moulding, casting, laminating or impregnating.
