PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new catalyst for producing a petroleum resin, which can allow the petroleum resin, that is produced by using the catalyst, to be excellent in hue and polymerization conversion ratio of monomers in a starting oil and have low gel content and which can allow the starting oil containing large quantities of dicyclopentadienes to be used particularly and to provide a method for producing the petroleum resin by using the catalyst for producing the petroleum resin.SOLUTION: The catalyst for producing the petroleum resin comprises boron trifluoride, phenol and propanol, is a boron trifluoride/phenol/propanol composite complex and is characterized in that a hydroxyl group-derived peak in theH-NMR spectrum measured in heavy chloroform at room temperature is shown by a single peak having 7.3-8.9 ppm concentration. The method for producing the petroleum resin by using the catalyst for producing the petroleum resin is also provided. |
