The instrument has a flow sensor (Q) determining volume/mass of a heat distribution medium flowing into or returning from a heat exchanger (W). A temperature sensor (T1) detects temperature of the medium flowing into the exchanger. Another temperature sensor (T2) detects temperature of the medium returning from the exchanger. An arithmetic unit (R) calculates an amount of heat exchanged by the exchanger by using measuring signals output by the sensors. Pressure absorbers (P1, P2) determine pressure of the medium, where the determined pressure is utilized to calculate the amount of heat. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining an amount of heat exchanged by a heat exchanger.
