The brush head (1) has a housing (2) and a rotatably supported bottom roller (4) that is rotatably mounted to the housing opposite to a surface to be cleaned of dust and agitate dirt particles. Several knife blades (7a,7b) are arranged for parallel to floor on the bottom roller and are movably mounted relative to the roller rotation axis of bottom roller. The knife blades comprise a bearing element by which the blades are stored in housing and/or blades are moved to operating position in which knife blades are protected. An independent claim is included for a method for cleaning a bottom roller of the brush head for a cleaning appliance.
