The method involves determining current vehicle position and current travel direction of a vehicle (4) based on a map data. A region of the map data of the vehicle is selected based on current determined road category probability model. A probable route (5) is selected from the result of application of the selected probability model in the region of the map data. The route of the vehicle is determined. Roads of a road system are divided into different road categories such as populated area roads, urban main streets or highways.
