An image forming apparatus comprising: an image bearing member configured to be rotatable and to allow a toner image to be formed on a surface thereof; an intermediate transfer member configured to rotate the image bearing member by contacting and operating the image bearing member to be driven, and to receive the toner image transferred from the image bearing member;an image bearing member drive unit configured to drive the image bearing member by generating an assist torque for operating the image bearing member to be driven; a control unit configured to output a torque instruction value to the image bearing member drive unit to control the assist torque generated by the image bearing member drive unit; and a measurement unit configured to measure a maximum speed and a minimum speed of the surface of the image bearing member rotating, wherein the control unit controls the image bearing member drive unit using a new torque instruction value determined based on torque instruction values respectively corresponding to a maximum speed and a minimum speed when controlling the image bearing member drive unit so that the maximum speed and the minimum speed measured by the measurement unit are included in a range which is predetermined according to a target speed of the image bearing member.
