The system has sensors for detecting vehicle surroundings, and actuating elements engaged in vehicle dynamics. A display unit (1) displays status of a driver assistance system. Transverse guidance assistance function is detected by outer lane boundaries (3a, 3b) of an own vehicle. Extended functionality of the transverse guide assistance function is activated when the display unit represents the detected outer lane boundaries at inner lane boundaries, which are located on the display unit and closer to a center (M) of an own lane (2). An independent claim is also included for a method for supporting a motor car by a driver assistance system.
