The method involves holding the motor vehicle by motoring torque that is generated by an electric drive machine (EM) of the motor vehicle, where the efficiency of the electric drive system comprising the electric drive machine is monitored. An alternative holding system is activated for holding the motor vehicle if the efficiency drops to a certain level. The available torque of the electric machine is monitored for monitoring the efficiency of the electric drive system.
