PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a positive electrode active material capable of modifying the state of the surface of a particle and suppressing deterioration in battery capacity.SOLUTION: A positive electrode active material comprises: a particle 2 of a lithium-containing compound; and an inorganic oxide layer 3 provided on at least a part of the surface of the particle. The average thickness of the inorganic oxide layer is within the range of 0.2 nm or more and 5 nm or less. A part of the surface of the positive electrode active material particle 2 may be exposed form the inorganic oxide layer. The inorganic oxide layer may have an island-like shape to be sprinkled on the surface of the positive electrode active material particle.
