PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform read processing on documents of different sizes as a spread document intended by a user.SOLUTION: An image processing apparatus comprises: read means for reading a document placed on an original platen in a spread mode; storage means for storing image data of the document read by the read means in the spread mode; division means for dividing the stored image data for one page into image data items for two pages; and control means which performs control, such that a size of the document read ahead by the read means is compared with a size of the document read later in a successive manner, image data of a document of a larger size is divided by the division means in the case where the size of the document read ahead and the size of the document read later are different, and image data of a document page read ahead and image data of a document page read later are respectively divided by the division means in the case where the size of the document read ahead by the read means is equal to the size of the document read later.
