PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel process for the synthesis of 3-(2-bromo-4,5-dimethoxyphenyl)propanenitrile, and application to the synthesis of ivabradine and addition salts thereof with a pharmaceutically acceptable acid.SOLUTION: A process for the synthesis of the compound represented by the specified formula (I) comprises subjecting the compound represented by the specified formula (VIII) to the action of a base in the presence of acetonitrile in an organic solvent to yield the compound of the formula (I).
