The method involves detecting a measured variable characterizing a function of an internal combustion engine (12). The electric machine (18) of the motor vehicle is operated in a checking mode, in which a predetermined operating point of the internal combustion engine is adjusted by the electric machine coupled with an output shaft of the internal combustion engine. A motor braking of the internal combustion engine is executed in the checking mode. The electric machine is operated in checking mode during a fired operation of the internal combustion engine.
