The invention comprises di-(2:2:2-trifluoroethyl) acetaldehyde acetal of the formula: <FORM:0790824/IV (b)/1> and a process of producing this by the reaction between acetylene or vinyl acetate with 2:2:2-trifluoroethanol in the presence of a mercury catalyst and an acid substance, also the process of dealcoholysis of the acetal by heating it with a dehydration catalyst, advantageously fluidized, according to the equation: <FORM:0790824/IV (b)/2> In examples are described the preparation of di-(2:2:2-trifluorethyl) acetaldehyde acetal by reaction between 2:2:3-trifluoroethanol and acetylene in presence of mercuric oxide and BF3/ether complex; and with vinyl acetate similarly; the decomposition of the acetal product to give 2:2:2-trifluorovinyl ether, by heating at 270 DEG C. and over, passing upwardly through a fluidized bed of acid-activated clay catalyst of specified size, stationary pumice in a cracking tube at 340 DEG C. and over, pumice coated with silver at 300 DEG C. and over, Fe2O3 on pumice, at 320 DEG C. and over, and platinized asbestos at 390 DEG C.; many other catalysts are specified, generally of the "dehydration" type, acidic ones preferred, and carbonized catalysts may be used. |
