A turbulator 10 for promoting turbulence in fluid flow in a pipe 26, the turbulator comprising a central axial portion 12 and a plurality of discrete turbulating elements 14 arranged at spaced locations along the central axial portion. The elements may be of a screw flight shape, part screw flight and extend around the axial portion for 360 degrees, for more than 360 degrees or for less than 360 degrees. At least one of the elements may extend around the axial portion for more than 180 degrees and at least one other element may extend around the axial portion for 180 degree or less. The central axial portion may comprise a stainless steel rod, tube or mandrel. The elements may be welded or brazed to the axial portion and the direction of screw may be reversed for some of the elements. The pipe may be used in heat exchangers. The spacing of the elements may be varied. The turbulator may have another function and may be rotated and / or reciprocated in the longitudinal direction of the pipe to clean the walls of the pipe. |
