<p>An energy conversion system comprises an electrolysis unit 1 comprising a vessel for containing a quantity of fluid, and operable to electrolyse the fluid to generate a working gas, a plasma torch 8 to convert the working gas generated by the electrolysis unit into a plasma jet 15 containing a mixture of positively and negatively charged particles and a current generator 16 receiving the charged particles. A field generator 13 (e.g. superconducting coils) generates a magnetic field in the vicinity of the plasma jet 15 to separate the positively and negatively charged particles; and the current generator 16 having respective electrodes 17, 18 receive the positively and negatively charged particles, and provide an electrical current caused by the absorption of the particles, the current outputted by a first output conductor 20. The current generator may be an MHD generator and a catalyser (thorium or iridium) is provided in the formation region of the plasma jet to increase ionisation. Power is also outputted from the field generator at output 27. Fig 5 (not shown) comprises an ionisation arrangement in the region of the plasma jet comprising a pair of anodes 28 and a coil 29 forming a cathode.</p> |
