579,129. Stopping gas mains. GAS LIGHT & COKE CO., HOLLIDAY, G. C., and AUSTEN, C.R. May 20, 1941, No. 6481. [Class 99 (ii)] A damaged gas main is sealed by inserting into the pipe system connected to the main, at a point remote from the damage, an inflatable balloon connected to a flexible inflating-tube, feeding the collapsed balloon along the pipe system to the desired point in the main, and then inflating the balloon, an adaptor consisting of a short length of more flexible tubing being interposed between the inflating-tube and the balloon to facilitate the negotiation of bends in the pipe system. Fig. 2 shows a long inflating- tube a connected at one end to a bulb pump l through a shut-off valve k, and at the other end by means of the adaptor tubing b to the balloon e which for insertion through a length of service piping m to the main o is held in a folded condition by a spring f, Fig. 3. When the balloon has reached the desired position it is inflated by means of the bulb l. Instead of the spring, a rubber band or piece of adhesive tape may be used to hold the balloon collapsed. |
