A rectifier comprises a PN junction Ge die electrically connected to a metal mounting, a metal member held by a glass seal in the mounting, a further member electrically connecting the die and member, and a metal cap which, with the mounting, forms an enclosure for the Ge die which is filled with inert gas. In the Fig. 2 embodied, the die 1, plug 2 and wire 17 are soldered together to form a subassembly which after etching and testing is fitted into mounting 21 as shown. Wire 17 is then welded to terminal wire 5 which is insulated by sleeve 7 and glass sealing bead 16 from the mounting. Metal cap 18 is afterwards sealed to a ferrule 19 on the mounting in an inert gas. An alternative method of assembly is to fix the plug and wire to the mounting and terminal respectively and then to solder the die in place. In a further embodiment (Fig. 1) a strip 4 replaces wire 17 and cap 8 is welded to an annular disc 14 on the mounting. A cooling fin 9 is insulated from the mounting by washer 13 and brush 12. The junction in the die may be produced by fusing In to an N type Ge slice or by evaporation of Au on to such a slice followed by a diffusion heating as described in Specifications 753,133 and 753,140. A suitable die may also be produced from a crystal grown in a melt the composition of which is changed from N to P type during the growth.</p>
