Arcuate lightguide and light emitting device comprising the same

In one embodiment of this invention, a device comprises an arcuate lightguide with an arcuate light emitting surface and light extracting features wherein the arcuate light emitting surface intersects the optical axis of a light source when disposed on the input edge of the lightguide. The light emitting surface of the lightguide may be in the shape of a elliptic paraboloid or parabolic cylinder or tapered. In another embodiment of this invention, a device comprises an arcuate lightguide wherein the wherein the ratio of the sagittal depth of the lightguide to the thickness of the first input edge is greater than 2. In another embodiment of this invention, the device is a light emitting device comprising the aforementioned lightguide and a light source.

a) A dome lightguide comprising
i. a first input edge at the base of the dome wall disposed to receive light into the wall of the dome from a first light source with a first optical axis and transmit light by total internal reflection within the wall of the dome;ii. a light extracting region comprising a plurality of light extracting features;iii. a first arcuate light emitting surface disposed to direct a first portion of light input into the first input edge out of the dome lightguide; wherein the first arcuate light emitting surface intersects the first optical axis.
