An apparatus for selectively detecting a presence of a gaseous compound in a mixture of gases, wherein said apparatus comprises a probe comprising: a) a first sensor selectively responsive to the presence of a gaseous oxidizing compound, a second sensor selectively responsive to a gaseous reducing compound containing no nitrogen, and a third sensor selectively responsive to a gaseous reducing compound containing nitrogen, each of said sensors comprising a transition metal oxide deposited as a film on a substrate, said substrate comprising an electrode, said film having a conductivity that is selectively responsive to said gaseous compound, wherein said metal oxide in said first sensor comprise rhenium oxide structured metal oxide, said metal oxide in said second sensor comprise rutile structured metal oxide, and said metal oxide in said third sensor comprise alpha molybdenum trioxide-structured metal oxide; b) a chamber for exposing the probe to a breath of a subject such that said probe responds selectively to a gaseous component in said breath; and c) an analyzer electrically connected to each of said sensors such that said analyzer measures said changes in said conductivity of each of said sensors.
