A hard composite composition comprises a binder; and a polymodal blend of matrix powder. In an embodiment, the polymodal blend of matrix powder has at least one local maxima at a particle size of 30 μm or less, at least one local maxima at a particle size of 200 μm or more, and at least one local minima between a particle size of about 30 μm to about 200 μm that has a value that is less than the local maxima at a particle size of 30 μm or less.

1. A method of testing a sample for erosion comprising:
providing a test specimen; measuring a first mass and a first density of the test specimen; placing the test specimen in a testing container with a slurry that comprises an erosion material and a fluid; freely moving the test specimen through the slurry in the test container for a period of time; removing the test specimen from the testing container; measuring and recording at least one of a second mass and a second density of the test specimen; and calculating an erosion rate for the test specimen.
