The invention relates to a process for the biocatalytic production of ambroxan by means of a polypeptide with the activity of a homofarnesol-ambroxan cyclase, which are a novel class of enzymes.

A process for the production of ambroxan derivatives of formula (2), comprising biocatalytically converting homofarnesol derivatives of formula (1) to ambroxan derivatives of formula (2) using a polypeptide with the activity of a homofarnesol-ambroxan cyclase,wherein the polypeptide is encoded by a nucleic acid molecule selected from the group consisting of:
a) a nucleic acid molecule which encodes a polypeptide comprising the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 2 or SEQ ID NO: 5; b) a nucleic acid molecule which comprises the polynucleotide sequence of SEQ ID NO: 1; and c) a nucleic acid molecule which encodes a polypeptide having at least 95% sequence identity to the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 2 or SEQ ID NO: 5, wherein said polypeptide has the activity of a homofarnesol-ambroxan cyclase.
