A multiprocessor computer system comprises a plurality of nodes, wherein the nodes are ordered using a snaking dimension-ordered numbering. An application placement module is operable to place an application in nodes with preference given to nodes ordered near one another.

1. A computer system for placing applications in multiprocessor computer system having nodes linked via an interconnect network, comprising:
a memory storing computer-executable instructions of: an application placement module operable to place an application in a plurality of the nodes, by: providing an ordering of the nodes using a snaking dimension-ordered numbering such that numbering traverses across a smaller dimension while snaking in at least one other dimension before traversing across a larger dimension wherein sequential numbers are assigned to nodes forming repeated geometric shapes in the smaller dimension, and placing the application with preference given to nodes ordered near one another based on the provided ordering by favoring placement in sequentially numbered nodes so that the nodes tend to have a low mean distance to other nodes in which the application is placed; and a processor for executing the computer-executable instructions stored in the memory.
