A magnetic bearing actuator system comprising: at least one electromagnetic actuator configured to generate forces to resist loads within a structure; and at least one control system in communication with the at least one electromagnetic actuator, the at least one control system having at least two operating modes; where at least one mode is a deactivatable high-power operating mode and at least one mode is a high-efficiency operating mode; where the high-efficiency operating mode is activated during normal operation of the magnetic bearing actuator system; and where the control system is configured to detect the loads within the structure and selectively activate the high-power operating mode to avoid impermissible displacement of the structure.
