To obviate wicking of air along the cords of the chafer strip 18 of a tubeless tyre, the strip 18 is formed of a fabric of interconnected multifilament cords 22 arranged so that the cords extending transversely of the bead 14 have both ends terminating in the outer side wall 19 of the tyre. The fabric strip may be square woven as shown, coated on both sides with butyl rubber, and folded longitudinally with its edges 25, 26 staggered. The folded strip is built into the tyre bead with the folded edge 24 overlying and adhered to the radially inner edge of the butyl rubber inner lining 15 of the tyre, adjacent the bead toe, and the staggered edges 25, 26 extending radially outwardly along the axially outer bead face. During moulding of the tyre, circumferential sealing ribs are moulded in the rubber coating of the chafer strip forming the outer bead face. The cords 22 may comprise twisted continuous synthetic filaments such as nylon and the fabric may be of lino or weftless weave, and may be bias cut so that the transversely extending cords are disposed obliquely to the circumferential direction in different directions in the two portions of the folded strip. |
