Use of a composite material for eliminating radioactive elements of an aqueous effluent, is claimed. The composite material comprises at least one inorganic compound adapted to capture at least one radioactive element, and at least one porous polymeric matrix entrapping the inorganic compound. Independent claims are included for: (1) a composite material comprising at least one inorganic compound adapted to capture at least one radioactive element and a porous polymeric matrix trapping the inorganic compound; and (2) decontaminating an aqueous effluent or radioactive elements, comprising contacting the aqueous effluent with a composite material, forming two phases including a solid phase constituted by the composite material having captured radioactive elements and a liquid phase constituted by the aqueous effluent, and separating the solid phase and the liquid phase.
