579,539. Invalid carriages. BARTLETT, B. G. W., and NORTHERN PATENT DEVELOPMENTS. May 23, 1944, No. 9926. [Classes 136 (ii) and 13.6 (iii)] Invalid and like carriages are provided with an auxiliary member 18 additional to the normal carriage frame adapted to stay the driven axle 16, the driving axle 12 and the carriage frame so as to reduce relative spring. The member 18 may have a third arm 25 radiating from the apex 19 and engaging loosely under or clipped to a transverse rail 27 on which the seat pillar 28 is mounted. The outer end of the arm 23 is rigidly clipped to a transverse rail 30 which is near or coincident with the axis of the driving lever axles 15. The outer ends of the transverse rails 27, 30 are secured to longitudinal rails 29. Vertical pillars 32 support the rails 27 and 29 and may be stayed longitudinally by plates 31, clipped to the rails 29 and pillars 32, and laterally by similar plates clipped to the rail 27. Alternatively; the pillars 32 and plates 31 may be replaced by a single webbed casting or stamping. Adjustment of the driving chain is effected by movement of a bracket 41, Fig. 3, which has a smaller diameter than the bore of the apex 19 of the member 18 in which it is housed. The bracket 41 is secured to the lever 18 by studs (not shown) and slots 42. Two separate chain drives may be employed to provide alternative gear ratios, the connection to either with the rear shaft 16 being made by a dog clutch. |
