Anion-exchange resins containing two or more nitrogen atoms in each anion-exchange group are prepared by reacting under alkaline conditions a cross-linked polymer containing haloalkyl groups, an o -ethylene oxide substituted alkyl halide, and a primary or secondary amine to form an intermediate polymer which is further reacted with an amine. The o -ethylene oxide substituted alkyl halide and the amine may be reacted together and then reacted with the polymer or, in a modification, the polymer may be reacted with the amine and then with the o -ethylene oxide substituted alkyl halide, and the products finally reacted with an amine. The polymer may be polystyrene cross-linked with divinyl benzene or ketone and in examples beads of chlormethylated polystyrene cross-linked with divinyl benzene are reacted (1) swollen with benzene, with 3-diethylamino-1,2-epoxypropane, a reaction product of diethylamine and epichlorhydrin in a medium made alkaline with caustic soda, and (3) swollen in ethylene dichloride with diethylamine and then with epichlorhydrin in dioxane, to form intermediate resins which are reacted with diethylamine or trimethylamine to give strongly basic resins of high anion exchange capacity. |
