FLAME RETARDANT POLYESTER COMPOSITION

Disclosed herein is a method of reducing the amount of antimony flame retardant compound in a flame retardant composition which comprises using calcium oxide or a combination of talc and calcium oxide as a filler in the composition, wherein the composition comprises: (a) 30 to 80 percent by weight of a polyester; (b) 3 to 30 percent by weight of a brominated flame retardant compound; (c) 0.1 to 5 percent by weight of an antimony flame retardant compound; (d) 0.01 to 5 percent by weight of a filler comprising calcium oxide or a combination of talc and calcium oxide; and wherein: (i) the composition meets or exceeds the requirements of UL94-V2; (ii) less antimony retardant compound is present in the composition comprising (a), (b), (c), and (d) as compared to a composition comprising component (a), (b), (c) and no (d); (iii) the comparative tracking index (CTI) is the same as or greater than the CTI for a corresponding composition comprising (a), (b), (c), and (d) as compared to a composition comprising component (a), (b), (c) and no (d); and wherein the weight percents are based on the total weight of the composition.. Also disclosed are compositions prepared by such a method and articles derived therefrom.
