1. A diagnostic method for a reciprocating internal combustion engine, comprising:
determining cylinder pressure as a function of crankshaft angle in a combustion chamber of the engine during a combustion cycle, the combustion cycle including a fuel injection event, determining a heat release rate as a function of crankshaft angle in the combustion chamber during the combustion cycle, the heat release rate determined from the cylinder pressure at a given crankshaft angle, and estimating a crankshaft angle associated with an end of the fuel injection event from the first derivative of the heat release rate in relation to the crankshaft angle.
