A novel clutch separator plate is disclosed. The improved clutch separator plate incorporates openings which pass over the friction pads of a friction plate to improved thermal stability, reduce drag and provide consistent and positive engagement.

In a clutch system including a friction plate, said friction plate including a friction pad area, said friction pad area having an annulus defined by the inner boundary and outer boundary of said friction pad area, the improvement comprising: a clutch separator plate, said clutch separator plate in concentric relation to said friction plate and wherein said clutch separator plate includes an outer boundary, an inner boundary and a plurality of openings, said outer boundary and said inner boundary encompassing said annulus and said openings being within said annulus.
